This past Sunday, I had Masses and parish visits in Boscobel and Muscoda, followed by another Mass at Camp Gray for young adult retreatants.

Like many people, I’ve been getting little sleep these days, pondering the troubles plaguing the world.

BELOIT — Apple cores and banana peels had a special use following a recent snack time for Our Lady of the Assumption School (OLA) first graders.
Students recycled the organic materials by putting them into a worm bin. It was part of the first grade curriculum unit about soil, recycling, and composting.
OLA first grade teacher Cynthia Welte said, “I really enjoy environmental science so I felt this project would be perfect.”

Revealing one of the most significant themes in Catholic theology, namely, the play between nature and grace, St. Luke tells us that people came to John the Baptist, asking what they should do to reform their lives. John responds with good and very pointed moral advice.
To the tax collectors he says, “Don’t take more money than you ought” and to the soldiers he urges, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone; be content with your pay.”
In so saying, he was addressing very common practices of that time and place. Tax collectors regularly demanded more money than was just and skimmed the surplus for themselves — which helps to explain why they were so unpopular. And soldiers — young men with weapons and too much time on their hands — predictably acted as bully-boys, extorting money through threats of violence.

In response to the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia this past September, the Office of Evangelization and Catechesis of the Diocese of Madison is providing a monthly series on a particular theme on marriage and family. Conservation International has sponsored a series of videos that have become YouTube sensations, garnering millions of views.
They feature famous actors — Harrison Ford, Kevin Spacey, Robert Redford, and others — voicing different aspects of the natural world, from the ocean, to the rain forest, to redwood trees. The most striking is the one that presents Mother Nature herself, given voice by Julia Roberts.
