‘Remembering’ October 1938

I’d like to go back in time a little. I’d like to go back 83 years to October 1938, which should be no surprise because it says so in the headline.

Making Mary a bigger part of our lives

In this month of October, we honor the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Rosary; we celebrated this feast on October 7.

All of the saints and indeed the Church herself encourage us to pray the Rosary on a daily basis.

We find in this simple and repetitive prayer a profound meditation on the Gospel, as we ponder the mystery of the Incarnation in the Joyful Mysteries, the revealed grace of the Lord’s ministry in the Luminous Mysteries, the overwhelming suffering of Christ’s Passion in the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the triumph of the Resurrection in the Glorious Mysteries.

Next ‘Unite’ Rosary Rally on October 11

Rosary Rally
More than 3,000 people are expected to take part in the second Unite Wisconsin Rosary Rally on Sunday, Oct. 11, in Madison. Pictured above are clergy and parishioner participants on State St. in Madison during the initial rally on August 15.

MADISON — On Sunday, Oct. 11, many will again come out to pray in downtown Madison.

Hoping to repeat the numerical and spiritual success of the previous rally, the second Unite Wisconsin Rosary Rally will be held to honor Jesus and his Blessed Mother.

The first rally took place on August 15 and brought more than 3,000 people out.

Materials for the October event said, “We are all living in perilous times facing EPIDEMICS and THREATS TO OUR FREEDOMS. Our cities are disintegrating into anarchy with RIOTS damaging the property and taking the lives of innocent people. More than ever, we are being called to pray together — to UNITE Wisconsin against all evil.”

The event is being planned in conjunction with similar rallies going on in many other parts of the United States on the same day and will be the conclusion of a 54-day Rosary Novena that started the same day as the previous rally.

October observed as Month of the Rosary

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated on October 7 in the Catholic Church.

Also, in 1917, three Portuguese children were visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, over a period of six months. The final visit was on October 13, when about 70,000 people witnessed the dancing sun, performed by Our Lady.

As a result, many people were converted, while non-practicing Catholics returned to the faith. Hence, praying in a public arena has the potential of converting people and making Catholics stronger in their belief.

We should respect all life, especially the unborn

Respect Life Month in October invites us to respect life across the board. We should especially respect and defend the rights of helpless unborn babies who cannot defend themselves.

The 2016 Doritos Super Bowl commercial showed an unborn baby in his or her mother’s womb. To me, this was natural and obvious. I was familiar with advances in ultrasound imaging and I think that human life begins at conception as the Church teaches.

Life in the womb can’t be denied

I didn’t expect it, but I wasn’t surprised by comments from some affiliated with the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) who criticized Doritos for “humanizing fetuses.” Cal Thomas of the Tribune Content Agency responded, “Humanizing fetuses? What does that sonogram image show if not a human?” He added, “Pro-choice persons fear the sonogram because it shows an image whose humanness cannot be denied.”

Let’s renew our commitment to defend all human life

Pablo Casals, the great cellist and conductor, gazed at a baby and exclaimed, “You are unique. In the millions of years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. And look at your body; what a wonder it is! Your exquisite legs, your arms, your cunning little fingers. You may become another Shakespeare, Michelangelo, or Beethoven.”

St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, whose feast we celebrated on October 1, believed that people of her time feared God too much. She couldn’t understand how anyone could fear God, who came to us as a tiny helpless baby.

And yet, today there seem to be some who fear babies more than God.
