Personnel changes in the diocese

MADISON — There have been a number of personnel changes and updates in the Diocese of Madison this year.

Daun Maier, executive director of the Catholic Diocese of Madison Foundation, Inc.

Daun Maier will serve as the first executive director of the newly formed Catholic Diocese of Madison Foundation (CDMF), effective July 1.

The CDMF’s principal function is to serve parishes, parish schools, parish members, and other charitable endeavors within the diocese.

Workshops for extraordinary ministers of Communion

MADISON — The Diocese of Madison’s Office of Worship will hold Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Workshops at two locations in the coming weeks.

  • At Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 2222 Shopiere Rd., Beloit, on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
  • At St. Joseph Church, 405 S. Dacotah St., Dodgeville, on Saturday, March 1, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Seat of Wisdom courses for the Year of Faith

MADISON — Inspired in this Year of Faith by Pope Francis’ emphasis on charity and social justice, the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis is sponsoring two new courses on Catholic Social Doctrine, both being taught by Dr. Constance Nielsen.

The six-hour introduction course is being offered in regional parishes and available for local programming at the request of parishes or schools.

The more expanded course is being offered at the Bishop O’Connor Center one Saturday per month throughout the academic year. Remaining dates include November 23, January 25, February 22, March 22, April 26, and May 17.

Recall season overlays final legislative sessions

A year ago, the first thing the newly elected Legislature did was to adopt its scheduling resolution for the 2011-12 legislative session.

This resolution defined the floor periods during which the Legislature would meet to debate and pass legislation. In so doing, the legislators determined that they would convene for three “general business” floor periods between January 17 and March 15 in 2012, the last day of regular business for the year.

Complicates legislative schedules

When they adopted that resolution, our lawmakers had no way of knowing that their session schedule would mesh with Wisconsin’s first ever recall of a governor and recalls of several state senators. But that is what appears will happen and it will affect what lawmaking takes place in these final floor periods.
