Rwandan genocide survivor Immaculee’ Ilibagiza to host two-day retreat at St. Ann Parish

STOUGHTON — You may have been one of the 800 people who were blessed to hear Immaculee’ Ilibagiza speak at St. Ann Parish, Stoughton, back in March of 2017.

Or maybe you are one of the thousands who have read Ilibagiza’s book, Left to Tell, about her harrowing 100 days hidden in a tiny bathroom with six other women and one child, in an attempt to avoid being killed by members of the Hutu tribe in her home country of Rwanda in Eastern Africa.

Parishes could help immigration relief by sponsoring a family

To the editor:

As a past member of the Latin American Mission Program, I have a great concern for immigrant conditions on the border. These are basically Catholic refugees fleeing from abhorrent conditions looking for a safe haven for themselves and their families.

We know what it’s like to lose a cathedral

On the morning of March 14, 2005, I was awakened with news that smoke was billowing out of the roof, spire, and bell tower of St. Raphael Cathedral in downtown Madison.

Our reporter then, Julianne Nornberg, traveled quickly to the scene of the fire, which had started at 5:31 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene at 5:39 a.m., and they worked to control the fire caused — we found out later — by an arsonist.

Destruction of cathedral

Unfortunately, the fire destroyed the roof of St. Raphael Cathedral, which collapsed into the church. The 150-year-old church was destroyed. A new spire, which had been raised to the top of the cathedral’s spire in 2014, was saved.
