Share the spiritual journey with author/teacher Paula D’Arcy

MADISON — An automobile accident in 1975 changed Paula D’Arcy’s life forever.

She woke up to discover that her husband and daughter had been killed in the wreck, but the baby she had carried for three months was still alive inside her.

“Everything about my life altered at that moment,” she says. “I was at a fork in the road; I could despair, or I could go deeper.”

A New Year’s resolution: working for peace

Most of us think of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as occasions to enjoy some food and drink with our family and friends. We might even wear party hats!

But according to the Church calendar, New Year’s Day is much more than a day to party. First of all, it is a holy day of obligation— the Feast of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. That means that faithful Catholics are obliged to attend Mass that day.

World Day of Peace

In addition, the Catholic Church has designated January 1 as the World Day of Peace. This was introduced in 1967 by Blessed Paul VI, who was inspired to do so by the encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth) written by his predecessor, St. John XXIII.

The power of prayer: Pope Francis invites Palestinian and Israeli presidents to pray for peace

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Pope Francis has again surprised the world by inviting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli President Shimon Peres to join him at the Vatican to pray together for peace. The event has been scheduled for Sunday, June 8.

The pope announced his invitation to Abbas on May 25 at the end of the Mass that Abbas attended in Manger Square in Bethlehem. Later the same day, Pope Francis repeated his invitation — using the same words — to Peres after arriving at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv.

Stay on the path of dialogue and peace

Pope Francis has urged the two leaders to stay on the path of dialogue, reconciliation, and peace. There is “simply no other way,” the Holy Father said.

Mothers leave indelible mark of love on our hearts

A man felt that he was too busy to visit his mother on Mother’s Day, so he stopped at a florist to wire her some carnations.

A little girl came in and tried to buy a rose for her mom for 75 cents. The clerk told her that a rose costs two dollars. Tears revealed her pain.

The man generously paid for the girl’s rose and then ordered carnations for his mother.

As he drove thoughtfully away, he saw the little girl in the nearby cemetery. He stopped and saw her tearfully placing the rose on her mother’s grave.

The man canceled his wire order of carnations. He personally delivered them to his mother. He decided to enjoy her presence while she was still alive.

The ‘mother’ of Mother’s Day

Anna Jarvis (1864-1948) was so proud of her mother that she worked to establish a day when she and others could honor their mother and all mothers. She is known as the “mother” of Mother’s Day.
