We should not demean people using food stamps

To the editor:

Recently a Catholic politician, Newt Gingrich, speaking to his supporters called President Obama, the “food stamp President.” This was meant to demean African-Americans as well as the working and non-working poor who need the basics of life.

It just so happens that many more white people are using food stamps to survive than African-Americans or Latinos. Mr. Gingrich needs to be told that we as Catholics do not speak of God’s people in such terms.

President, university have poor records on abortion

To the editor:

The swooning over the president’s recent visit to UW-Madison is dying down, but the sinister similarity between the man and the institution is very much alive.

Obama has an abysmal voting record on abortion issues; as an Illinois senator he voted down medical help for babies who survived abortion, allowing them to slowly suffocate.

Stay alert on health care reform

Now that the health care summit convened by President Barack Obama is over, it seems that there will be tactical efforts used to pass a bill in Congress despite many concerns raised by lawmakers and citizens.

The U.S. Catholic bishops and other Catholic leaders have urged all parties to commit themselves to health care reform that is affordable, accessible, and protects the life and dignity of every person.
