We must accept and respect life

The third chapter of Genesis details the cosmic tragedy of original sin. Adam and Eve lived in a primordial innocence, in complete spiritual harmony with God, each other, and within themselves. Life was perfect!

Let us respect life in all its stages

We Catholics observe October as Respect Life Month. During October, we are asked to recommit ourselves to cherish, defend, and protect those who are most vulnerable from life’s beginning to its end.

But I think it is more challenging to consider protecting the lives of those who have been convicted of crimes. Obviously, they are not innocent.

However, as Catholics we are called to protect ALL human life. In 2018, Pope Francis revised the Catechism of the Catholic Church’s section on the death penalty to teach that the death penalty is “inadmissible” and to say that the Church “works with determination for its abolition worldwide.” In a rescript, or decree, the Holy Father replaced the previous version of n. 2267 of the Catechism to read:

Bishop Hying to lead 2019 Respect Life Retreat

BARABOO — “I’ll be focusing on building a culture of life through the beauty of the human person. We often talk about human dignity, but it goes beyond human dignity. It’s the beauty of the human person that needs our focus,” Bishop Donald J. Hying said.

He is preparing to lead the Respect Life Retreat Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 to 7, at Durward’s Glen Retreat Center in rural Baraboo.

Let us respect life in all its stages

In 1972, Respect Life Month was initiated by the American Catholic bishops. It is observed yearly during October in American Catholic dioceses.

It stresses the value and dignity of human life in all its stages. It is dedicated to increasing a greater culture of life through public information, education, pastoral care, public policy, and prayer.

Why would you take a day to learn about life issues and stand in Chicago’s Federal Plaza listening to speakers like Pat McCaskey, co-owner of the Chicago Bears? What can he tell you about valuing life? Do you feel you have heard the pro-life message and not much more can be said?

Your voice is needed at State Capitol

As Catholics, we believe that life begins at conception. So when babies die in miscarriage or stillbirth, their parents should be able to have a service for them.

Elizabeth Ministry, headquartered in Wisconsin, is also working with more cemeteries to set aside an area for babies who have died before birth.

In Wisconsin, there are two pieces of proposed legislation which seek to demonstrate greater respect for unborn children.

Heal Without Harm

The Heal Without Harm Initiative is a package of two complementary bills, the “Unborn Child Disposition and Anatomical Gift Act” (SB 424/AB 550) and the “Fetal Remains Respect Act” (SB 423/AB 549).
