Society grieves loss of over 53 million children

To the editor:

Thirty-eight years have passed since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion for any reason at any time during pregnancy in all 50 states. In spite of the passage of decades, January 22 will forever be regarded as a day of infamy and pain by millions of Americans.

Over 53 million American unborn children have lost their lives in that time span to abortion. Untold numbers of mothers, fathers, grandparents, and family members have been devastated by the loss of a child in this despicable manner. They are left scarred and in pain.

Concern about increasingly violent society

Editorial logo

As we continue our reflections during Respect Life Month, my thoughts this week turn to the increasing incidents of violence in our world.

It seems as if violence is so prevalent today, from abortion to domestic violence, from gang violence to human trafficking, from war to the death penalty, from destroying human embryos for research to physician-assisted suicide.

Voters can take action to protect human life

To the editor:

The editorial “Respecting All Human Life” (Catholic Herald, October 7, 2010) correctly points out that the most vulnerable among us, the babies in the womb, lack the protections needed to safeguard their lives. The article lists many good things that we can do to protect these children, such as prayer and witness through 40 Days for Life.

However, we voters have another opportunity to take positive action to protect the most vulnerable and this is by not voting for those who have a track record of being pro-abortionists.

Poverty is a moral crisis threatening our country

Editorial logo

October as Respect Life Month prompts us to think about all aspects of human life. Our Catholic faith emphasizes the dignity of human life from the womb to the tomb.

Between the womb and tomb, we require the basics of food, clothing, and shelter to survive. Hopefully most of you reading this have far beyond the minimum daily requirements of all of those essentials.

October is a time of prayer

Dear Friends,

As we begin the month of October, we recall first of all that this is Our Lady’s month — specifically the month of the Most Holy Rosary.

Let’s form our own ‘humane society’ to protect babies

Editorial logo

When we think of respecting all human life, we usually start with pre-born life in the womb. Naturally that should be the beginning of our focus, since that’s where all human beings begin their existence.

Just ask expectant parents these days. They often talk about their unborn baby by name (for example, our son and his wife have chosen a name for their second daughter, who is due in December). Parents also see ultrasounds of their children in the womb and it’s obvious to them — as it should be to everybody — that this is a baby. Birth is just one stage in the development of that new little person.

The road to world peace starts with each one of us

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

We laugh when women running for beauty crowns are asked about their goals in life and they say, “World peace.” We think it sounds silly to wish for such a lofty goal. How could one person make such a difference in the world — and achieve world peace, no less?

But upon reflection, I don’t think it’s an unattainable goal. Each of us can do our part to work for world peace. And I believe it’s tied in with respecting life, something to ponder as we conclude October as Respect Life Month.

Defend right to life by feeding the hungry

Editor's View by Mary C. UhlerSome people consider the “right to life” as dealing primarily with issues such as abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. However, respect for life from womb to tomb must include caring for the needs of people throughout that spectrum.

Pope Benedict XVI reminded us of this wider pro-life view in a message he wrote for World Food Day, observed on October 16 this year. His written message was addressed to Jacques Diouf, director-general of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

‘Respecting Life’ should include lives lost in wars

To the editor:

Nowhere in the “Respect Life” issue of September 25 did I find any mention of the thousands of innocent lives that have been, and will still be, lost in the ongoing wars taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan. Don’t these lives deserve prayerful recognition as well?
