To the threshold of the apostles

“Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days” (Galatians 1:18).

Beginning in early November 2011 and extending through much of 2012, the ad limina visits by United States bishops will constitute the most comprehensive review of Church life in the United States since Pope Benedict XVI was elected in 2005.

To the threshold of the apostles

“Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days” (Galatians 1:18).

From February 9 through 17, 2012, Bishop Robert C. Morlino and the bishops of Region VII (Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin) will visit Rome for their quinquennial “ad limina apostolorum” visit (literally, “to the threshold [of the tombs] of the apostles” [SS. Peter and Paul]).

We can’t lose our hearts: We need compassion in dealing with severe budget restraints

editor's view by Mary C. Uhler

On my visits to Rome in previous years, I can remember seeing gypsies sitting on street corners in colorful but ragged clothes. Often women and children with sad faces would beg for us to put some coins in their cups.

I know the Roma or gypsies have been the subject of controversy. I’m sure they are considered nuisances by the citizens of Rome, who have tried to deport them to their countries of origin.

But whatever the situation, we should have compassion for them, especially for the children who have no control over who their parents are or where they are born. That’s why I was particularly disturbed to learn that four gypsy children burned to death on February 6 while sleeping in a makeshift shack on the outskirts of Rome.

Pilgrims at the consistory

ROME, Italy — At first the thought of standing in line for baggage, hotel rooms, metal detectors, tickets, admissions, etc. in my orthotic-assisted shoes was a bit daunting.

Future priests benefit from experience in Rome

Future diocesan priests David Carrano and Greg Ihm say the last four years studying in Rome have been an exciting and enriching experience.

The two will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on October 8, 2009, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson of St. Louis, Mo., will ordain about 30 men from the Pontifical North American College (NAC) in Rome.

On June 25, 2010, Carrano and Ihm plan to be ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Madison by Bishop Robert C. Morlino in Madison.
