Mary’s Assumption gives us hope

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

The Renaissance painter Titian painted an inspiring picture of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven.

Mary is dressed no longer in blue, but in the flaming red of victory. Escorted by angels, she rises majestically in the heavens into the glory of God.

The apostles stand below gazing upward with wonder and joy. The picture is so vivid that it almost appears to be a photograph.

Living ideals in the Declaration of Independence

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It is also known as the Fourth of July.

It is associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, political speeches, and ceremonies. On Independence Day we also celebrate other events concerning the history, government, and traditions of the United States.

Father’s Day shows dad’s importance

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd is known as the “Mother of Father’s Day.” In 1909, she heard a sermon on the need to set aside a day to honor mothers. She agreed, but she wondered why there wasn’t a day to honor fathers.

Her father, William Jackson Smart, left indelible marks of love on her heart.

He was a Civil War veteran and a widower for 21 years who heroically raised Sonora and her five younger brothers after their mother died while giving birth to her brother Marshal.

Feast of Corpus Christi: Honoring the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

On June 2, we celebrate Corpus Christi, the feast of the Eucharist. In Latin Corpus Christi means the Body of Christ. The full Latin name of this feast is “Corpus et Sanguis Christi’’ — “The Body and Blood of Christ.”

In some countries and sometimes in our diocese, during this feast there are edifying processions when the sacred host is carried outdoors or around the church.

A mother leaves indelible marks of love on our heart

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

Enrico Caruso, the great tenor, grew up in poverty. His mother sacrificed to pay for his first singing lesson. However, his voice teacher told him, “You can’t sing. Your voice sounds like the wind in the shutters.”

Enrico walked home discouraged, with shaky steps and tearful eyes. “Mamma” he sobbed, “My teacher said that I can’t sing! I want to quit singing lessons.”

Enrico’s mother hugged him and said, “My son, you’ve got a great voice. Don’t give up. Someday you’ll be a great singer!

Let us live our Easter faith every day

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

A mother overheard Danny, her five-year-old son, talk with his friend Jeremy whose father recently died. “Where did your dad go when he died?” asked Danny. “Mom said that he went to Heaven,” replied Jeremy.

“What’s Heaven?” asked Danny.

Jeremy answered, “Mom said that Heaven is a place where we go after we die. Everyone will be happy. We’ll see Jesus, his mom, my grandma, grandpa, dad, and others we know who died. I can’t wait to go there!”

“Wow! Wow!’ said Danny, “But how did your dad get to Heaven? His car is still here.”

“I don’t know,” replied Jeremy. “I’ll ask mom. She knows everything!”

Sacrament of Reconciliation prepares us to celebrate Easter

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

Somerset Maugham, the famous British novelist, once remarked, “I have done things that I am unable to entirely forget. If I had been fortunate enough to be Catholic, I could have delivered myself of them at confession, received absolution, and put them out of my mind forever.”

His statement makes us realize how blessed we are to have the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli: an inspiration in the Year of Faith

Carlo Gaetano Samuele Mazzuchelli was born on November 4, 1806 in Milan, Italy. He died in 1864 as pastor of St. Patrick’s, Benton. Years later, as pastor of St. Patrick’s, I walked the parish grounds, presided at Mass, and visited his rectory and grave. My knowledge and admiration of him deepened. He certainly is an inspiration in this Year of Faith.

Catholic Schools Week: A time to thank teachers

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

Catholic Schools Week 2013 is scheduled from January 27 to February 2. Its theme is “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards.” This theme highlights the launch of a new initiative to ensure consistent high standards at Catholic schools across the country. The logo designed for this week illustrates a chart of steady growth culminating in the highest achievement of all, a cross representing the faith that underscores all Catholic education.

The Catholic Church’s educational mission flows from Jesus’ life and teaching. The cross symbolizes the sacrificial love that Jesus teaches us to imitate. In the Dictionary of the Bible, Fr. John L. McKenzie wrote that Jesus spent more time teaching than anything else, including working miracles, signs, and wonders. Through education, the Church continues Jesus’ teaching by preparing her members to hear, live, and proclaim the Gospel. Good teachers are keys to successful Catholic schools.

Let us work for peace in the new year

Seeing with Jesus' Eyes, a column by Fr. Donald Lange

A good New Year’s resolution is to continue to work for peace. History has shown that helping to bring peace takes patience, prayer, and perseverance. Past human efforts to achieve peace have not been overly successful.

According to the June 1988 issue of Today in the Word, in 3,530 years of recorded history, only 286 years saw peace.

More than 8,000 peace treaties were made and then broken.
