We’re better than this!

Catholic News Service posted a photo of a Pittsburgh Steelers fan displaying a sign October 28 to honor the victims of the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue before the game between Pittsburgh and the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.

The sign said, “Hatred can’t weaken a city of steel.” It pointed to the killing of at least 11 people and the wounding of six others, including four police officers, during the October 27 shooting at the synagogue.

The real truth is to keep your focus on Jesus

To the editor:

As we deal with the horrors of the shootings over this past weekend, the result of which will certainly be the demand to rid ourselves of firearms, I would like to focus on the real truth, which is, the prince of this world is Satan (Job 1:7, 1 Peter 5:8, Rev 12:9). We are dealing with the agents of Satan and the people under his influence. He will not be restrained until Jesus returns (Rev 19:11-20:3).

How to prevent tragedies from happening

Many parents and grandparents like myself are afraid of shootings happening in their children’s and grandchildren’s schools.

In fact, a recent study from Ball State University of parents’ expectations found that about 36 percent of respondents believed that their local high school was highly likely to have a gun incident in the next three years.

Time to set aside politics and protect our children

They were looking for answers, not just platitudes, as a group of students and parents affected by school gun violence met with President Donald Trump on February 21.

Faced with the personal anguish wrought by the most recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead, President Trump pledged action, saying, “We don’t want others to go through the kind of pain you’ve been through.”

Active shooter training held for diocesan staff

MADISON — With stories of workplace and school shootings making up the latest news headlines, the task of learning how to protect one’s self and save lives is gaining importance.

Staff members from the Diocese of Madison and other organizations in the Holy Name Heights building recently took part in active shooter training in order to be prepared to react to an event, if it should happen.

A Lenten response to violence

It was interesting to see people with crosses on their foreheads in the crowds shown after the school shootings in Parkland, Fla.

Of course, the shootings occurred on Ash Wednesday, so some of the parents and other family members had gone to Mass during the day.

Is there a message for us? The more I thought about it, I think there is.

What happened in Connecticut

Dear Friends,

It seems like forever ago that I saw the movie, The Exorcist (and it was forever ago in the sense that it was in the ’70’s) but there was one scene and one line that stuck with me. It was not any of the overblown portrayals of the Devil’s presence, though they did go overboard in that movie in certain instances, and attributed to the Devil certain things that the Devil could not do, just to make it more sensational.
