How can we keep from singing?

There is a lot of excitement among many people regarding re-opening our Catholic churches for Mass in our diocese. Unfortunately, it will be quieter than usual.

Using the best scientific, medical, musical, and liturgical advice, choirs and congregations will not sing until further notice in the Diocese of Madison (and in most dioceses across the USA).

I have to say, that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write! I have been a singer, choir director, and church musician for my entire adult life. I’ve given many workshops and written numerous articles on the importance of music in the Mass.

Risk of passing on the virus

Even so, research is showing that singing raises the risk of passing on the coronavirus and for that reason, it’s the proper response of the Church at this time.

Parish hosts Piano Recital and Hymn Sing on new piano

MADISON — There will be a Piano Recital and Hymn Sing on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 4 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 401 S. Owen Dr.

Yana Avedyan, DMA, will be the guest artist. She will perform the following works: Bach’s Prelude and Fugue 1 WTC No. 2, Beethoven’s Sonata Op 27 No. 1 movements 2 and 3, and Liszt’s Rhapsody No. 6.

Avedyan will be playing on the new Steinway Model B Grand Piano. Amy Yanzer, director of liturgy and pastoral music at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, explains the background of the new piano.

Spring Sing, Art Walk to be held at Beloit school

BELOIT — A Spring Sing and Art Walk will be presented for parents and the public on Wednesday, May 18, at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Grade School (OLA) gymnasium.

This celebration of the school’s arts programs will showcase the OLA choral groups and band, as well as students’ art projects.

The youth choir Christina Green belonged to performs just once a month, on the second Sunday at the 9 a.m. Mass. And sure enough, the day after the nine-year-old was killed in Tucson, Ariz., the youngest victim of the shooting targeting Representative Gabrielle Giffords, St. Odilia’s youth choir sang.

It was January 9, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and there was just one Baptism at that Mass, a nine-year-old girl.

That wasn’t lost on Fr. Richard Troutman, pastor of St. Odilia Parish in Tuscon, Ariz.
