A friend sent me a Christmas card that he proudly created. It featured a picture of Mary lovingly holding the infant Jesus. Under the picture were the words, “Who is Missing?”

The answer is St. Joseph, who as the head of the Holy Family, was there to support Mary as she gave birth to Jesus on Christmas. We honor him as a great saint because he was the foster father of Jesus who with Mary guided young Jesus as he grew in wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.

Role as protector

Joseph exercised his role as protector of Mary and Jesus discreetly, humbly, and silently. He did so with an unfailing presence and fidelity, even when he found it difficult and confusing.

Sister Jeannine Spuehler, OP, dies

SINSINAWA — Sr. Jeannine Spuehler, OP, died April 30, 2014, at St. Dominic Villa. The funeral Mass was held in Queen of the Rosary Chapel at Sinsinawa May 6, 2014, followed by burial in the Motherhouse Cemetery.

Sister Jeannine made her first religious profession as a Sinsinawa Dominican Aug. 5, 1951, and her final profession Aug. 5, 1954. She ministered as a teacher for 34 years, pastoral assistant for four years, and secretary for 12 years. Sister Jeannine served in Nebraska, Oklahoma, Illinois, Wisconsin, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

St. Joseph School in Baraboo expanding to include middle school program

BARABOO — St. Joseph Catholic School is re-establishing its middle school program and has started open enrollment.

During each of the next three years, the school will add one grade level, starting with a sixth-grade class next school year and seventh- and eighth-grade classes added in the two subsequent years.

The school currently offers a daycare, four-year-old kindergarten (4K), and kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. In 4K through fifth grades, the school has a total enrollment of 143 students.

St. Joseph students win big in math competition

FORT ATKINSON — Several students from St. Joseph School in Fort Atkinson were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate this year in the Math Olympiad program.

They participated in a series of five monthly contests of five problems each, from November to March, and weekly practice sessions under the supervision and coaching of parent volunteers.

The children were asked to solve unusual and difficult problems by applying math principles, logic, and by thinking creatively.
