Tragic fire destroys 150-year-old St. Raphael Cathedral in 2005

The cornerstone of St. Raphael Church in Madison was laid in 1854. It was later to become the cathedral church of the newly erected Diocese of Madison in 1946.

We know what it’s like to lose a cathedral

On the morning of March 14, 2005, I was awakened with news that smoke was billowing out of the roof, spire, and bell tower of St. Raphael Cathedral in downtown Madison.

Our reporter then, Julianne Nornberg, traveled quickly to the scene of the fire, which had started at 5:31 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene at 5:39 a.m., and they worked to control the fire caused — we found out later — by an arsonist.

Destruction of cathedral

Unfortunately, the fire destroyed the roof of St. Raphael Cathedral, which collapsed into the church. The 150-year-old church was destroyed. A new spire, which had been raised to the top of the cathedral’s spire in 2014, was saved.

Bishop Morlino has set a great example for us to continue pro-life work

To the editor:

More than 20 years ago, my new friend at our parish would take time to explain the Catholic Church’s teachings on pro-life to me. That led to meeting the pro-life prayer warriors outside the Madison Abortion Clinic across from St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison.

We were rejecting the politically correct mantra that promiscuity, contraception, and abortion are good for us. We were praying and witnessing for God’s plan for marriage and family.

MADISON — A Way of the Cross is being built on the St. Raphael Cathedral site in downtown Madison.

“This Way of the Cross will help us to recover the sacred character of the cathedral site,” said Msgr. Kevin Holmes, rector/pastor of St. Raphael Cathedral Parish.

Using stones from the burned St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison, local residents from Baraboo, Portage, and Merrimac desired to bring something sacred out of the ashes of the former cathedral.
