Longevity of tenure, culture evident in Waunakee

At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, St. John the Baptist School had a particular reason to celebrate: Returning teachers and staff. Because of longstanding staff tenure and connection to its community, the school is an example of outstanding Catholic culture.

Thanking our teachers this Thanksgiving

I hope that everyone enjoyed a blessed Thanksgiving.  Truly, we have numerous blessings for which to give thanks.   I am particularly grateful that our Catholic schools have been operating in-person this fall and that they have been able to provide children with a safe, faith filled, educational experience that honors and develops their intellectual, physical, social, spiritual and emotional traits by cultivating human relationships through in-person education.  I am thankful that our students have experienced this aspect of “normal” life in the midst of a most abnormal year.

Pray for all students and Catholic schools

Dear Friends,

As we come to the end of the school year, it strikes me as a wonderful time to reflect on Catholic schools.

Of course, this is made all the more easy for me as I’ve also just concluded an outstanding Confirmation circuit. It was simply a joy for me to be with our young people from parishes and schools around the diocese, and I have to say that I was very impressed with the young women and men I encountered and with whom I prayed.

Teachers are important for a good school year

The new school year invites us to reflect upon teachers’ importance.

Though they sometimes fall short like other humans, good teachers influence our youth who are the hope of the future. Through their classes pass future lawyers, doctors, reporters, writers, farmers, secretaries, engineers, and other shapers of tomorrow’s world.

Good teachers know and love their subject and their students. Coaches, chaperones, parents, counselors, and others who contribute to the school also teach youth. They often are role models.

We may have memories of teachers who made a difference. Some taught elementary school; others taught junior high, and still others taught high school or college. They often differed, but they had one trait in common. They cared about us, shared the subject that they loved, and helped us to grow. We should remember to thank them.

We’re all called to proclaim the Word

editor's viewEvery Catholic has a call to teach, proclaim the Word of God, and pass along the faith to future generations. We are reminded of that call as we celebrate Catechetical Sunday this weekend on Sunday, Sept. 20, in our parishes and homes.

This year focuses on the theme, “Catechesis and the Proclamation of the Word.” In many parishes, those who serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. We thank all people who step forward to serve as catechists in our parishes, teaching everyone from pre-schoolers to adults.
