The high cost of conscience

At the end of the liturgical year, the Mass readings tell dramatic stories from the Books of Maccabees of simple folks standing courageously for their faith in the face of torture and death. Their exemplary witness can strengthen us as we defend our conscience rights and religious liberty which are under attack today.

In second century B.C., a conquering king was intent on suppressing Judaism in Palestine. He issued a decree that his whole kingdom should all be one people, each abandoning his particular customs and religious laws and observances. Whoever refused to comply would be killed.

Though large numbers did comply, we’re told that many in Israel “preferred to die rather than be defiled with unclean food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Terrible affliction was upon Israel” (Maccabees 1:63).

New musical settings may begin in September

The diocesan Office of Worship, with the approval of Bishop Robert C. Morlino, has announced that parishes in the Diocese of Madison who wish to ease implementation of the new texts for the people may begin introducing the musical portions of the people’s parts of the Mass earlier than the general implementation date.

Miles se preparan para participar en jornada mundial de la juventud en Madrid

World Youth Day 2011 in MadridWASHINGTON — Más de 16.500 jóvenes procedentes de toda la geografía estadounidense se han registrado ya para participar en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2011 que se celebrará del 16 al 21 de agosto en Madrid.

Al menos 60 obispos estadounidenses acompañarán a los jóvenes en su peregrinación a la capital española. Entre ellos estará el Arzobispo Timothy Dolan de Nueva York, presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos, así como los cardenales Sean O’Malley de Boston, Francis George de Chicago y Theodore McCarrick, arzobispo emérito de Washington.

Por diócesis, Detroit, Filadelfia, Nueva York y Denver, que fue sede de la JMJ en 1993, están enviando los grupos más numerosos; California, Arizona y el área metropolitana de Washington, DC también cuentan con delegaciones considerables.
