United States has right to sovereign borders

To the editor:

I’m writing in regard to the pope’s chastisement of the United States on our immigration issues.

The American people took in 1.7 million legal immigrants in 2015. The Vatican is a sovereign nation with recognized borders; I would like to see them take in even 100th of one percent of that many people per year.

Adaptation and renewal of Religious Life: Go back to the sources in the past

Reflections on Religious Life column by Abbot Marcel Rooney

Editor’s note: During this Year of Consecrated Life, this is the fifth in a series based on the Second Vatican Council’s document, Perfectae Caritatis (Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life) written by Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB, former abbot primate of the Benedictine order who now resides in Madison.

This commentary on the Second Vatican Council’s Decree On the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life has already examined the council’s basic understanding of the role of Religious Life in the Church.

If this special vocation within the Church is to be renewed, just how would one go about that?

Sisters’ cooperation with Vatican hopeful sign

To the editor:

The statements in the recently released Final Report on the Doctrinal Assessment of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) to the effect that Jesus Christ is central and Sisters should be implementing “an ecclesiology of communion” echo past documents on the Religious Life. Some may miss why this is significant in the new report — after all, isn’t that a given for Religious Sisters?

The painful ground-level reality has been that some Sisters and whole LCWR congregations have grown apart from the Church in heart and mind and come to feel estranged from what they call “the institutional Church.” More than a few have questioned whether they want to be part of it.

Fr. John Putzer talks about Vatican Diplomatic Corps training

MADISON — Despite his fatigue from the exhausting journey (his flights from Rome lasted over 17 hours and covered approximately 5,000 miles), Fr. John Putzer smiled broadly as he exited the terminal at Dane County Regional Airport in Madison on Thursday, Sept. 20. Descending the staircase with a noticeable spring in his step, he took in his surroundings and exclaimed, “It’s good to be back!”

Change is not such a bad thing

grand mom

Aging is all about changes. Some changes are in-evitable. Some are good. And some are plain difficult.

Changing seasons is welcome. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, I stood sorting through my closet before dressing for church. The time for rusts and golds was past and it was too soon for Christmas colors. I picked purple.

An hour later as I walked into church, our sacristan grabbed my arm. “You remember that you’re a lector today, right?” I hadn’t, of course.

Church shouldn’t compromise with Chinese government

To the editor:

Regarding the recent illicit Chinese ordination of bishops:

You can’t bargain with the devil! This should be clearly understood by Vatican officials who persist in establishing, at all costs, improved relations with Communist China.
