Two parishes host Drive-Thru Taprooms to provide food and support local businesses

MADISON/WAUNAKEE — Two parishes — St. Maria Goretti in Madison and St. John the Baptist in Waunakee — supported local businesses by hosting Drive-Thru Taprooms providing food and beverages.

Those attending the event also had the option of offering a free will donation to the parish with their order.

Promoting businesses, helping parishioners

“This all came together quickly, and we didn’t have much of a playbook to follow,” said Mark Shapleigh, business manager at St. Maria Goretti parish. “The central event coordinator was Karben4 Brewing company.

WAUNAKEE — Bishop Donald J. Hying said it is a “great moment of joy in our Church” as he welcomed those attending the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion held on Sunday, March 1, at St. John the Baptist Church in Waunakee.

“We lift all catechumens and candidates up in prayer,” said Bishop Hying.

Catechumens, candidates

This year there are 36 catechumens (those seeking the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist) and 107 candidates (those who were baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to be welcomed into the Catholic Church) in the Diocese of Madison, a total of 143.

St. John’s Piecemakers Quilt Raffle December 17

WAUNAKEE — Who doesn’t like a beautiful quilt? Every quilt is different, colorful, and as unique as the people who create them. Quilts also add a warm, country flair to any décor, and for the St. John’s (Waunakee) Piecemakers Quilt Club, this year’s raffle quilt has special pizzazz.

The quilt named “Van Gogh Pizzazz” will be raffled off on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the St. John’s Gathering Room, and proceeds will go to the St. John’s School Endowment Fund.

‘Battle of the Books’ in Waunakee

WAUNAKEE — When a school gym is home to a raucous environment, high energy from students and parents, and spirited competition, one would naturally assume a sporting event is taking place.

During a recent morning at St. John the Baptist School in Waunakee, all of those efforts were not about sports — they were about books.

As a culmination of a year’s worth of reading, more than 70 students in grades three to six took part in the Battle of the Books, based on a national event where students from different schools read books and compete against each other in knowledge contests based on those books.

Giving back to her community

WAUNAKEE — Talk to any typical college junior and most of them may have thoughts of graduating, getting a job, and moving away from home.

While 21-year-old Erin Moran certainly has some of those things on her mind, she recently started another after-school activity that most might not find typical.

The Edgewood College student and Waunakee resident was recently elected to the Village Board of Trustees, along with two others, getting 1,740 votes in the April 3 election.

On Election Night, the Waunakee Tribune, when reporting the results, called Moran “perhaps the youngest [village board trustee] in Waunakee history.”

Moran, who received the second-most votes, came out ahead of two incumbents, who had both served on the board for more than a decade, according to the Waunakee Tribune.

Active in her hometown and beyond

Moran is one of four daughters of parents Steph and John. They are members of St. John the Baptist Parish in Waunakee.
