Badger Catholic hosts speaker, swing dance

MADISON — Leah Darrow, former America’s Next Top Model contestant, will speak to University of Wisconsin-Madison’s students Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7:15 p.m. in the Humanities Building, Room 3650. Badger Catholic invites all students and their guests to attend the speaker event, “College Through a Different Lens.”

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about Darrow’s personal experience in the modeling industry. She will share personal failures and wins in life as she stumbled out of the pop culture industry and into a faith-driven life.

Saving lives — one baby at a time

Pro-life individuals and organizations are working to change laws and public opinion, and they are making a difference in our state and across our nation.

Wisconsin experienced over a 10 percent decline in abortions in 2014, continuing a trend of fewer abortions during the past five years.

One way this has happened is that lives are being saved — one baby at a time — thanks to the commitment of pro-life pregnancy centers and volunteers.

Witnessing to our faith through work

Work is part of everyone’s life, whether it’s paid or unpaid. Yet how often do we think about how we witness to our faith through our work?

As the editor of a Catholic newspaper, I have more opportunity than others to integrate my work with my faith. But it is still a challenge to keep a faith perspective in every aspect of my work.

For some insights on this topic, I recalled a statement made by the state’s bishops in 2001. It is called Making Wisconsin Work Well: A Labor Day Challenge by Wisconsin’s Roman Catholic Bishops (still available on the Wisconsin Catholic Conference website at www.wisconsincatholic.org and well worth another look).

Abolish the death penalty

When I hear about someone being murdered, I say a prayer for the victim — and for the perpetrator.

Someone might question my praying for someone who has committed a crime. However, there are many circumstances that lead to that act of violence against another person.

We don’t know everything involved in that person’s life. Sometimes there may have been a lifetime of abuse he or she endured. There may have been mental illness leading to that act of violence.

Although we may be tempted to call only for justice for the victim — an “eye for an eye” — we also have to consider the possibility of forgiveness and healing for the murderer.

Going pro: Former Catholic Herald intern is sideline face of Brewers, Bucks

MILWAUKEE — If you’ve watched Milwaukee Brewers baseball or Milwaukee Bucks basketball broadcasts on Fox Sports Wisconsin the past couple of seasons, you’ve probably seen her.

Madison native Sophia Minnaert is the sideline reporter for the two teams.

A few years ago, she got her “start” as an intern at the Catholic Herald in Madison.

Minnaert’s parents are well known in the Diocese of Madison. Her father, Al, is the head football coach and a religious studies and physical education teacher at Edgewood High School in Madison. Her mother, Sylvia, is the receptionist at Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Madison.

Pray for wisdom for the Supreme Court

On April 28, the Supreme Court of the United States began taking up the issue of same-sex marriage.

We’ve been hearing plenty of comments from people on this issue, from those who support the marriage of one man and one woman and states’ rights to define marriage to those who want same-sex marriage approved across the country.

People often react emotionally when talking about marriage, but I think we need to take time to study the issues before the Supreme Court and what they mean.

We also should consider what the Catholic Church teaches and be able to talk about our beliefs calmly in conversations about marriage.

Some shocking news — and what to do about it

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Wisconsin has long held a reputation as a great place to live and work. We are known for providing an excellent education for people at all levels, along with good jobs and a safe place to live.

Our state prizes the values of opportunity, responsibility, family, and community, pointed out a speaker at a break-out session at the Catholics at the Capitol legislative conference held on April 8 in Madison.

Ken Taylor, executive director of the Wisconsin Council on Children and Families, said there are many good things happening in our state.

Shocking news

He also shared some shocking news.

Data published in April of this year reveals that Wisconsin has the highest unemployment rate for black people in our country at 19.9 percent. By contrast, less than five percent of white people are unemployed in Wisconsin.

Make ’em believe!

The theme for the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team has been “Make ’em believe.”

When they lost to Kentucky in the Final Four last year, most of the team (minus Ben Brust who graduated) came back to try to achieve their dream of becoming national champions.

They wanted people to believe that they could win that title, along with other goals of being conference champions in the regular season and post-season tournament.
