A thoughtful case for priestly celibacy

This article is the first of a two-part series.

There is a very bad argument for celibacy which has reared its head throughout the tradition and which is, even today, defended by some. It runs something like this: married life is morally and spiritually suspect; priests, as religious leaders, should be spiritual athletes above reproach; therefore, priests shouldn’t be married.

Perpetua, Felicity, and the theo-drama

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

On March 7, the Church commemorates the martyrs Perpetua and Felicity, along with their companions. These Christians were killed in the Roman Provinces of North Africa in the early third century A.D.

They were not alone, but shared the company of many Christians who were persecuted and killed during the early years of the Church’s life. The Church has persistently recalled the memory of the earliest martyrs.

Station to Station: An interview with Gary Jansen

Word on Fire

Some people dismiss the Stations of the Cross as a devotional relic of a bygone generation. But not Gary Jansen. In his beautiful book, Station to Station: An Ignatian Journey through the Stations of the Cross, Gary recounts how the devotion has changed his life and opened him up to new spiritual depths.

Here, Word on Fire’s Brandon Vogt interviews Gary about the Stations and his book.

Make straight the path for Lent

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

In these days, therefore, let us add something beyond ordinary expectations of our service. Let each one, over and above the measure prescribed, offer God something of his own freewill in the joy of the Holy Spirit. ~ Rule of St. Benedict, Sixth century

In roughly three weeks, Ash Wednesday will arrive and with this commemoration, the Church begins the penitential practices of Lent.

Mass begins as an encounter with Jesus

As many Catholics know, the Second Vatican Council famously referred to the liturgy as the “source and summit of the Christian life.” And following the prompts of the great figures of the liturgical movement in the first half of the 20th century, the Council Fathers called for a fuller, more conscious, and more active participation in the liturgy on the part of Catholics.

Why Our Lady of Sorrows?

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

The poet Wendell Berry reflects that “for parents, the only way is hard. We who give life, give pain. There is no help. Yet we who give pain give love; by pain we learn the extremity of love . . . ”

In other words, it may be different in another world, but in this world, all love requires a sacrifice, and with that sacrifice there is inevitable pain. To reject sacrifice as the condition for the possibility of love, is to live an essentially loveless existence.

Berry continues his reflection with this insight: I read of Christ crucified, the only begotten Son sacrificed to flesh and time and all our woe. He died and rose, but who does not tremble for his pain and loneliness, and the darkness of the sixth hour? Unless we grieve like Mary at his grave, giving him up as lost, no Easter morning comes . . .

Veneration of relics and bodies of saints

I write these words from Milan, Italy, where I am with my Word on Fire team filming new episodes for our Pivotal Players series.

I’ve seen lots of marvelous things on this trip, including the ruins of the ancient baptistery under the Milan Cathedral where, in the spring of 387, St. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose.

But the most fascinating sight I’ve taken in is the vested and mitered skeleton of that same Ambrose, which rests in the basilica that bears his name, not far from the cathedral.

Skeletal remains

Behind a grille, just under the main altar, lie the skeletal remains of Ambrose and two martyr saints, Gervasius and Protasius, whose bodies were recovered during his lifetime.

Bride and the groom are sign of God’s love

Two weeks ago, I had the great good pleasure of presiding at the wedding of my niece, Bryna.

She has been, all her life, a lovely girl, full of joy and good cheer — and eager to give herself in service to others.

Her husband, Nelson, is also a fine person, and he took the courageous step of becoming a Catholic in anticipation of his wedding.

A new look for our paper

You may have noticed that the Catholic Herald looks a little different this week. That’s because we have updated our paper with a fresh redesign done with our readers in mind.

We’ve listened to our readers’ comments and made some changes to help make the paper easier to read and more attractive as we begin a new Church year.

Anti-Catholicism should bother everyone

Recently two outrageously anti-Catholic outbursts took place in the public forum.

The first was an article in the US News and World Report by syndicated columnist Jamie Stiehm. Ms. Stiehm argued that the Supreme Court was dangerously packed with Catholics, who have, she averred, a terribly difficult time separating church from state and who just can’t refrain from imposing their views on others.
