Who was the first person in the New Testament outside of the Holy Family to recognize Jesus as Lord? “And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy” (Luke 1, 43-44).
The answer, of course, is John the Baptist, the unborn child that Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin, was carrying in her womb. An unborn child over 2,000 years ago can recognize God, but we in the 21st century cannot recognize God, the humanity, and the personhood of the unborn child!
Senator Barack Obama has made it perfectly clear that if elected president, one of his first priorities would be the passage of the “Freedom of Choice Act,” legislation that would strike down any law limiting a woman’s right to choose. This includes the ban on partial birth abortion, parental consent laws, the born alive infant protection act, and the Hyde Amendment (which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion). Obama supports embryonic stem cell research that destroys the embryo as well as the creation of embryos for the sole purpose of research.
Mother Teresa called “abortion the greatest destroyer of peace . . . Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching its people to love, but to use any violence to get what they want.” It is no coincidence that Senator John McCain and his wife Cindy are proud adoptive parents of a daughter who was brought home from a Mother Teresa orphanage in Bangladesh.
In a video message sent to National Right to Life, McCain states, “Wisdom suggests that we should be willing to give an unborn child the same chance our parents gave us. But it takes courage in this political climate to insist on the protection of unborn children, who can’t vote, have no voice, and can’t reward you with support and donations.”
“People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them . . . Let the children come to me and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (Luke 18, 15-16). We must continue to build a “Culture of Life,” where all life should be protected from conception until natural death. Senator John McCain understands the importance of this issue and he along with Governor Sarah Palin deserve our vote.
