It will take courage to reverse abortion, like it did for slavery

On October 9, 2008
Mark Malsam, Parker, Colo.

To the editor:

I strongly believe our society will be judged on how it has respected life or failed to do so over the last 35 years. Dating back to Roe vs. Wade over 35 million innocent children have been killed in our country. I want to make it very clear that I love and respect my country. I wonder and pray how we will be judged as a country and as individuals when we meet our heavenly Father.

I also think we don’t speak strongly and directly enough about this important issue. There are issues in every generation that are more important than other issues. One hundred and fifty years ago this country was divided on the issue of slavery. Many individuals, including numerous Catholics, thought states should have the “right to choose” if they wanted slavery in their state. The courage it took to reverse that tragedy is miniscule compared to what we need to do today.

One million innocent children a year being killed a year is more important than tax reform, educational reform, health care reform, offshore drilling, tax credits for solar energy, or government bailouts of insurance companies. We can no longer drown in a sea of relativism and cast a blind eye to what is going on in our great country.

Silence is affirmation. I also know we live and work in a world that is uncomfortable addressing this issue. I pray that we have the courage as Catholics to let our voices be heard. We can’t afford to keep our views silent anymore when speaking to our neighbors or coworkers. Our own vote has power; we also have the power to influence others. We can make a difference in this upcoming election.

Mark Malsam, Parker, Colo.
