Stop taxpayer funding of abortions

On April 2, 2009
Barbara L. Lyons, Milwaukee

To the editor:

The Hyde Amendment and over a dozen other right-to-life provisions that protect you from having to pay for abortions are up for grabs in Washington. Planned Parenthood estimates the Hyde Amendment alone has reduced abortions by 18 to 38 percent. If the Hyde Amendment is repealed, the number of abortions will skyrocket.

The House Appropriations Committee, headed by Wisconsin Congressman David Obey, is marking up appropriations bills at this time. It is imperative that the Hyde Amendment be enacted in committee as it is every year.

The Catholic bishops have initiated an aggressive e-mail campaign to ensure that the Appropriations Committee retains the Hyde Amendment and all of the other right-to-life provisions.

Please contact your congressman TODAY and ask him/her to retain the Hyde Amendment and all other right-to-life provisions that arise in the appropriations process. You can stop your tax dollars from paying for abortions. Write to your congressman at U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C. 20515, or go to www.house.gov/writerep and follow the instructions.

Barbara L. Lyons, Milwaukee, Executive Director, Wisconsin Right to Life
