Facts about guns are difficult to ignore

On December 14, 2011
Gregory L. Sheehy M.D.

To the editor:

I was disappointed in the Catholic bishops of Wisconsin’s statement on concealed weapons. Their advice tried too hard to appease everyone. But the facts are difficult to ignore.

Guns kill. Homicides, suicides, and accidental killings far outnumber any “defend life” shootings.

And Jesus Christ practiced and preached complete nonviolence, even when His own life was at risk. Our churches are sacred places where guns are not needed nor welcome. Indeed, even signs should be unnecessary to tell us that “no guns are allowed.”

Gregory L. Sheehy M.D., Middleton
