Living in a swing state: It underlines our responsibilities as faithful citizens

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Living in a swing state isn’t much fun. We’ve been inundated with television advertising and campaign phone calls for many months.

It wasn’t a surprise to hear that Madison was among the top five cities in the country in the amount of spending for political advertising. Just imagine all the good we could do to help the poor and reduce the deficit with all that money!

It’s been a trying time

Of course, the reason we’re a swing state is that the presidential race and the U.S. Senate race are too close to call. The voters in Wisconsin are almost evenly divided between political parties at this point.

Edgewood High students serve in the community

MADISON — They call it “Edgewood High School (EHS) in the Community.” On Wednesday, Oct. 3, over 700 volunteers from the high school worked at non-profit service organizations around the metropolitan area.

Classes were canceled while the students, teachers, staff, and some parent helpers filled needs in nearly 50 locations, providing 3,500 hours of service in one day.

Welcome to the Year of Faith

Under the Gospel Book by Bishop Robert C. Morlino

Dear Friends,

On Thursday of this past week we entered into a Year of Faith, which I marked with a beautiful evening of prayer, gathered together with representatives from throughout the diocese. The reflection I offered to those present was really intended for all in the diocese and so I share it with you here:

Adult Day Center adds meaning, purpose to lives

MADISON — On a recent visit to the Catholic Charities Adults Day Center in Madison, I noticed that plenty of windows let in lots of light. People were busy doing art projects, working at the computer, talking together, or listening to a speaker.

The Adult Day Center, located at 2917 International Lane near the Dane County Airport in Madison, offers purpose and meaning to the many lives it touches, observed Cricket Hesselberg, the center’s program director. She has worked there for 14 years.

Tom Moreland brings Catholic values to his work at Saint Jude Hospice

MADISON — “It was a defining moment of my life. God was leading me to care of the dying,” said Tom Moreland, founder and CEO of Saint Jude Hospice, in a recent interview.

Moreland was talking about his work with the Missionaries of Charity at an AIDS Hospice in San Francisco, Calif. He served there for two summers while he was an undergraduate student at the University of Kansas.

Church music: a flourishing garden that continues to grow

Guest Column

The articles and letters published in the Catholic Herald this past month show that people value quality liturgical music and have strong convictions about it.

This is encouraging to me, and our Year of Faith theme (Evangelization through Beauty) provides an excellent background for a fruitful discussion. I also am eager for this discussion because I have devoted my entire life to Church music. As we move forward, I would like to make the following observations.

The elections and my soul

Guest Column

As Christians we believe that Jesus Christ is the God who created us, the sacrificial victim who redeemed us, our judge, and our eternal destiny.

We learn from Christ and His Church that we are all children of God, each with equal value in God‘s eyes, and each sharing God’s love. The concept of human equality is a particularly Christian concept.

An opportunity to live our faith: a pilgrimage for life

Year of Faith column logo

I will never forget the events surrounding the first time I attended the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

Six months earlier I had taken a position as the director of religious education in a small rural community just outside of Canton, Ohio. I was armed with a new master’s degree in theology and all the hope in the world that all Catholics could fall deeply in love with God and the Church.

Early one morning I received a call from a friend, a professor at the college down the road and the moderator for the campus pro-life group. He called begging me to drive a group of college students to the March for Life in D.C. My immediate response was, “Are you crazy?” In Ohio, it is only a six-hour drive to our nation’s capital, but I wasn’t prepared to go to march for so many reasons.
