MADISON — They call it “Edgewood High School (EHS) in the Community.” On Wednesday, Oct. 3, over 700 volunteers from the high school worked at non-profit service organizations around the metropolitan area.
Classes were canceled while the students, teachers, staff, and some parent helpers filled needs in nearly 50 locations, providing 3,500 hours of service in one day.
Receiving help on “Edgewood in the Community” Day were the clients of such organizations as Agrace Hospice Care, American Red Cross, the Dane County Humane Society, East Madison Metro Coalition for the Aging, Goodman Community Center, Habitat for Humanity, Second Harvest Food Bank, and the UW Arboretum.
After “EHS in the Community” Day, Edgewood students will continue to volunteer throughout the year as part of the school’s service requirement and commitment to teach students to make service a regular part of their lives.
Most EHS students more than double the 100-hour graduation requirement, totaling about 8,750 annual student volunteer hours to the Madison area.
Costs for the day’s buses and supplies are supported by donations. EHS campus ministry plans and organizes the event in collaboration with school administration.
