We the people DO have a voice in protecting all life

On October 9, 2014
Trudi Jenny

To the editor:

I participated in the People’s Climate March in New York City on September 21 and was grateful to return to Madison to see the Voices page in the September 25th issue of the Catholic Herald.

Tony Magliano’s piece “The truth about climate change” cites Pope Benedict’s powerful and urgent statements re: the Church’s teaching on climate change.

Stephen Kent’s article “Why not us?” urges every Christian to be a light to the world despite the failures of our government and the UN to act on global issues.

His statement “Since solutions are not coming from capitols, executive mansions, or palaces, it is time they came from the people” reminded me of a statement on a Citizens’ Climate Lobby brochure — “When politicians don’t lead, citizens must show them the way.”

During Respect Life Month and as we honor St. Francis’ feast day on October 4, we have the opportunity to consider how we can best care for all life — the unborn, those on death row, the animals in the field, and yes, our planet.

As a result of my experience at the People’s Climate March, I am recommitted to curb my energy use, vote for candidates who are promoting solutions to climate change, and write letters to my members of Congress urging support for a carbon fee and dividend.

We the people DO have a voice. When enough of us speak, the tide will turn. As Stephen Kent says, “It was done by 12 people 2,000 years ago. Why not us?”
