Give Sunday back to all families

On December 2, 2015
Mike and Stacey Sanders

To the editor:

Why do our Catholic schools in the Madison area schedule sports on Sundays? Public schools don’t.

A couple weeks ago, I was sitting in the bleachers on Sunday, watching my daughter’s volleyball game. She had already played two games the day before, and it wasn’t even a tournament weekend.

Meanwhile, my spouse was tending to the needs and activities of our other children. We were spending this Sunday divided, like many Sundays before. Not only were we feeling the tension of this split, but we’re sure the coaches and referees were, too. How did we let this happen?

Sports can certainly be great extracurricular activities. They teach teamwork, honesty, cooperation, and leadership. Evidence clearly shows the positive impact sports have on an athlete’s physical health, academic achievement, and social development.

However, family time is just as important as, if not more than, sports in a child’s development. Let’s work to balance both.

We applaud Abundant Life’s decision to opt out of Sunday games within the Madison Area Independent Sports League. As we close this Year of the Family, let’s work together to give Sunday back to all families.
