Ban assault rifles for civilians

On December 6, 2017
Wm. T. (Bill) Wambach

To the editor:

A letter to the editor in the November 30 Catholic Herald stated: “Problem does not lie with guns . . .”

In several of the recent mass murders, the disturbed gunman used many weapons, including semiautomatic assault rifles. Without that weapon, many fewer people would have died.

I am a 92-year-old hunter. I own and use a deer rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a .410 shotgun. All my ammo is kept three floors separated from my weapons, which have locks on them.

I disagree with the writer. There is no logical reason for anyone other than military or police to own assault rifles. Hunting and target shooting do not require such weapons of mass destruction.

Certainly this is a mental health issue. BUT, it is also a gun problem. I implore our state and federal elected officials to pass legislation restricting such assault weapons to ONLY be used by military or police.

Wm. T. (Bill) Wambach, Sun Prairie
