Bishops’ positions on public policy issues must be thoughtful and informed

On March 6, 2019September 13, 2023
James M. Roherty

To the editor:

Let the following be understood as a plea rather than a criticism. It is necessary and proper that our Catholic bishops address affairs of state or, if one likes, public policy issues.

But in all seasons, the positions taken must be thoughtful, informed, and above all generous in keeping with their office. This does not describe the commentary of many of the episcopate on the complex of issues having to do with immigration and securing  the borders of the country.

These are issues made all the more complex by negligence on the part of Democrats and Republicans for decades. Statements about “division and animosity” (Bishops oppose call for national emergency (Catholic Herald/2-21-19) do not help.

We expect — and look for — a more elevated commentary from our bishops.

James M. Roherty, Madison
