Urge Congress to support bi-partisan Carbon Fee and Dividend

On February 12, 2020May 17, 2023
Ryan O'Connor

To the editor:

I enjoyed Bishop Hying’s recent column about right to life issues, especially our mission to spread the Gospel of life, promote the flourishing of the human person, and care for the most vulnerable.

Over 11,000 scientists have warned that the climate emergency also threatens millions of lives and livelihoods through air pollution, fires, extreme floods and droughts, and sea level rise. As Catholics, we have a moral obligation to take scientific warnings seriously and move quickly to promote solutions while safeguarding life.

Carbon Fee and Dividend is a bi-partisan solution that would impose a steadily rising fee on the source of fossil fuels and return the money to every American household to offset the rising cost of goods. It would solve the climate crisis while creating jobs and growing the economy. The majority of people come out ahead financially, with those in poverty benefiting the most.

It’s supported by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, because it addresses the crisis while protecting the poor. Addressing climate change is part of the seamless garment approach to respecting life and avoiding unnecessary deaths by protecting earth systems that allow life to flourish. Urge our members of Congress to support bi-partisan Carbon Fee and Dividend.
