‘Start of Lent’ retreat offered for Madison-area men

MADISON — Madison-area men will have a “start of Lent” opportunity to enhance their Lenten experience at the newly renovated Jesuit Retreat House overlooking Lake Winnebago near Oshkosh.

It’s a rare chance to spend time with God in prayer, surrounded by the beauty, peace, and solitude of nature.

“What God reveals in Scripture is the love in which we are created, the love that sustains us, and the love in which we will rest,” said Fr. Chris Manahan, Retreat House director.

Love animals more than our own offspring?

To the editor:

A person breaking an eagle egg gets arrested. A doctor piercing a baby’s heart inside the womb is not arrested. They don’t call it a baby.

A doctor who fixes a baby’s heart in the womb is praised, and they call it a baby.

They call it a mother’s choice to kill or not to kill. Yet they advertise on TV to save the animals. Send money to help animals, because they are mistreated.

Be a part of the pro-life cause to end abortion

In his visit to the United States, Pope Francis especially praised two Catholics. They were Thomas Merton and Dorothy Day.

In 1925, Dorothy Day became pregnant. Because of a previous abortion, her pregnancy seemed a miracle. Now she had to make the toughest decision she ever made. If she gave birth, Forster Batterham, the child’s father, would leave her. He would stay with her if she aborted their baby.

Creed of the People of God

Knowing Your Faith column

John Joy

This new year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s magnificent profession of faith, the Creed of the People of God.

The 1960s were a tumultuous time in society at large and a time of great confusion in the Church. After the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), many Catholics thought that it was no longer important to believe the teachings of the Church or that the teaching of the Church had changed.

The lessons within Christ’s Baptism

Word on Fire
Fr. Steve Grunow

On January 8, we celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and it is with this awe-filled liturgy that the three great revelations or “theophanies” of the Christmas season were brought to stunning fulfillment.

The first of those revelations was the birth of the Christ child, which was celebrated on Christmas Day. This “theophany” presented to us the first occasion when it was made known to human sight that God had accepted for himself a human nature and allowed himself to be born in this world as a man.

Center welcomes immigrants, and they give back

CMC Madison
Marlene and Ray help in the food pantry at the Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) in Madison. They have volunteered at the center for many years. Ray came to the United States from Mexico when he was 16 years old and later married Marlene. They raised a family of nine children. MADISON — The Catholic Multicultural Center (CMC) in Madison has an extensive history working to welcome the stranger, actively serving immigrants from countries all over the world and all walks of life for the last three decades.

In 2017, CMC English as a Second Language classes served 163 students from 34 different countries who spoke 17 different languages.

Whether coming to the CMC seeking services, support, a sense of community, or to help out, each immigrant has their own story. Three immigrants at the CMC offered to share their stories.

Long journey to citizenship

Marlene and Ray have been volunteering at the CMC food pantry every week since 1995 and were actively involved with the CMC in different capacities even before that.

The CMC was recently blessed to experience a major milestone in the couple’s life: After being in the U.S. for 40 years, Ray became a U.S. citizen this past fall.
