Janesville teen finalist in cooking contest

JANESVILLE — An eighth grader at St. William School needs your help to win $30,000 for his school.

Elijah Thurner and his family are finalists in the Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest, sponsored by Uncle Ben’s rice.

The contest was developed to encourage children to make healthier choices by getting them interested in cooking at an early age. The goal is also to empower parents to connect with their children one meal at a time and aims to make cooking an enjoyable activity that brings families together.

Praying for, focusing on unity in the Church

Dear Friends,

This past Sunday we had the opportunity to celebrate a Feast Day which can often pass by unnoticed and under-appreciated by many Catholics.

November 9 is always the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, but for those Catholics who do not attend Mass on a daily basis, the opportunity to hear about this feast only comes about when November 9 is a Sunday.

John Henry Newman at the synod

Controversies surrounding the recent Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family have put me in mind of Blessed John Henry Newman, the greatest Catholic churchman of the 19th century.

Newman wrote eloquently on many topics, but the arguments around the synod compel us to look at his work regarding the evolution of doctrine.

The development of doctrine

When he was at mid-career and in the process of converting from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism, Newman penned a masterpiece entitled On the Development of Christian Doctrine.

Autumn retreat at Schoenstatt Heights

MADISON — “What Have I to Give?” is the theme for the Schoenstatt autumn retreat to be held from November 15 to 16 in Madison. It will be a time to prepare for Advent in prayer and reflection. All are invited to attend.

Women make promises in new Widows of Prayer group

VERONA — The Widows of Prayer is a new group which began in Appleton and was approved within the Diocese of Madison.

It began when a group of women made a decision to devote themselves to a ministry of prayer for priests and vocations to the priesthood. They chose to foster devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and to reach out to widows with compassion.

‘Make it orange, make it end’

BELOIT — On Wednesday, Oct. 22, students at Our Lady of the Assumption School in Beloit dressed in orange to bring awareness to the issue of bullying.

October 22 was National Unity Day, and wearing orange signified a message of support, hope, and unity.

Chris Stefanick brings Theology of the Body to life

On Sunday, Oct. 19, there were at least two “sell-out” crowds in the state that showed high energy and devotion. One was at Lambeau Field in Green Bay as the Packers routed the Carolina Panthers. The other, at the exact same time, was 130 miles away at St. John the Baptist Church in Waunakee.
