Janesville teen finalist in cooking contest

On November 18, 2014
Kevin Wondrash

JANESVILLE — An eighth grader at St. William School needs your help to win $30,000 for his school.

Elijah Thurner and his family are finalists in the Ben’s Beginners Cooking Contest, sponsored by Uncle Ben’s rice.

The contest was developed to encourage children to make healthier choices by getting them interested in cooking at an early age. The goal is also to empower parents to connect with their children one meal at a time and aims to make cooking an enjoyable activity that brings families together.

The family, with Elijah as the chef, made a three-minute cooking video showing how to make “Porcupine Meatballs.”

Their entry is one of 25 finalists. There will be five winners out of the finalists who will win $30,000 for their school’s cafeteria. Each family will also win $15,000.

You can help Elijah and his family win by viewing and voting on their video.

From now through November 26, visit www.unclebens.com or go to bit.ly/14f2DEz to view the video “Eli’s Porcupine Meatballs” and vote on it.

There is a voting ballot under his photo. Anyone 18 and over can vote once per day.

His parents, Christine and Steven, said, “This contest has been a great opportunity to not only encourage families to cook together, but also to hopefully award our school and win a nice college fund for our children.”
