Consider taking off coat when attending Mass

Dear fellow Catholics:

Consider taking off your coat when attending Mass. We are, after all, visiting the home of our Father and partaking in a meal with Him.

Catholics’ response to immigration and other political issues

To the editor:

President Trump’s temporary immigration ban was abrupt to prevent a surge of terrorists who would try to get in before a pre-announced tightening of the vetting process.

The short list of countries affected by the ban, though Muslim (like many others), had in common being identified by the Obama Administration as especially concerning.

Witnessing on behalf of those who have no voice

To the editor:

Every hour of the day and of the night in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Rose Convent in La Crosse, we pray to our “ever faithful God . . . to empower us to witness to the Gospel with courage.”

Since Ash Wednesday, 2014, persons have been praying and witnessing on the sidewalks by Mayo/ Franciscan Medical Center in La Crosse.

Repentant persons can reveal Lord’s mercy

To the editor:

Have you ever noticed that among thousands of women saints who are virgins, and several great men saints who repented of fornication, there are no unambiguously historical canonized women saints who were neither virgins nor married, except, traditionally, Mary Magdalene?

One might confusedly wonder if Jesus is above all for virgins, not sinners, and if such women should pin their hopes on purgatory.

We must have health care for all Americans

To the editor:

What will we Americans do to save 53,000 American lives every year? Twenty-seven million Americans could lose coverage in the first year of repeal of the Affordable Care Act, according to the Congressional Budget Office. This is in addition to the 26 million who did not have health insurance in 2015. A Harvard School of Public Health study finds that for every thousand people without health care, one dies each year.

Put people first, then environment

To the editor:

In writing about Pope Francis’ opinions of climate change, the writer in the December 15 issue of the Catholic Herald quoted the importance and opportunity of “stewardship of our earth in human solidarity.”

Not once in the article is there a reference to conserving LIFE. Other quotes in the article are also vague.  “Avert deterioration by human activity.” “Outstanding academic and research institutions make a vital contribution in the years ahead.” “Scientist work free of political, economic, or ideological interests.” They must “build a cultural model to confront the challenge of climate change.”

Thanks for help with Rosary Crusade

To the editor:

We want to thank the Catholic Herald for the publicity before our recent Rosary Crusade. We had a wonderful turn-out.

Our thanks go out to Fr. Peter Auer, who led the Rosary, including the Glorious Mysteries and Benediction afterwards; to the Fourth Knight Knights of Columbus Marie Assembly 1150 of Jefferson; and many others who helped with readings, songs, and setting up the chairs, including the ladies of the Council of Catholic Women, who provided the lunch.

Support scientists in protecting our planet’s health

To the editor:

Thank you for publishing the December 1 article on Pope Francis’ November speech at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Pope Francis said, “I would say that it falls to scientists, who work free of political, economic or ideological interests . . . ” to build a cultural model to confront the challenge of climate change.

American Catholics must also support our scientists. U.S. bishops could hold a similar science summit. This would be an opportunity to teach Catholics and public leaders and explain the Catholic principle of stewardship of our earth in human solidarity.

Future for persons with disabilities looks brighter

To the editor:

It was with great pleasure I read the front page article about the name change of the Apostolate for Persons with Disabilities! The future for persons with disabilities in our diocese looks much brighter.

The added staff can only lead to greater results as the Apostolate works to ensure the full inclusion in parish life for ALL Catholics.

Father Pavone’s actions showed disrespect for right to life

To the editor:

It was with disgust I viewed a video posted to video access of Fr. Frank Pavone placing an aborted fetus on an altar and holding it up for view. By this action, Father Pavone showed a disrespect for right to life and his actions were as offensive as abortion itself.
