Thanks for support of fish fries, especially Good Friday dinner

To the editor:

On behalf of Our Lady of the Assumption (OLA) Parish, I would like to thank everyone who supported our fish fries this past season.

In particular, we would like to thank those who attended and supported the Good Friday fish dinner.  That night we served over 325 individuals and families, some of whom may not have had a good meal that day without your donations.

Honoring Mary during May has special significance this year

For many centuries, Catholics have devoted the month of May to Mary. Both in our churches and in our homes, we offer special prayers to Our Lady and honor her as our spiritual mother.

This year, this month takes on special significance. On May 13, we will mark the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady to three shepherd children in 1917 in Fatima, Portugal.

Would you die for your faith?

Would you be willing to die for your faith? It’s something I’ve thought about more recently as I’ve heard about modern-day martyrs.

We usually think of martyrs as people from long ago. But there have been — and continue to be — modern-day martyrs who have died for their beliefs.

Support bipartisan effort addressing climate change

To the editor:

I was excited to see that House Republicans have submitted a resolution to address Climate Change (H. Res 195) and important Catholic voices have expressed their support and gratitude.

For the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Frank Dewane of Venice, Fla., and Bishop Oscar Cantu of Las Cruces, N.M., each chairs of USCCB Committees, welcomed the commitment of these legislators to address the challenge of climate change.

Encourage early start on volunteering

Most children like the idea of helping others. Parents find this out when they ask their children to help pick up their toys or help set the table or clean up dishes after a meal.

We’ve encouraged our grandchildren to help when they visit our house. They seem happy to assist us, and I’m pleased to see they help when they visit other places.

Volunteering — like so many things — begins in the home. But it’s also important to teach kids about helping others outside of the home. As followers of Christ, we have an extra incentive in living out His commandment to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves.

We must respond to assaults in Syria

To the editor:

The latest assault on civilians in Idlib province in Syria shows a brash disregard for the most vulnerable.

How can we spend our time and resources on the latest fashions or sporting events while all over the world innocent children and families suffer unimaginable hardship in in their own countries?

The tragedy of human trafficking

Imagine a young girl sexually abused in her home from the age of five.

By the age of 13, she was drinking and smoking. She ran away from home and ended up being a prostitute. She was beaten, burned, and ruled by fear by her pimp. She felt trapped in what they call “the life.”

Every day should be Water Day

We know that water is essential to all life on earth. In fact, human beings can only live for three days without water.

Yet, I think most of us take water for granted. We expect water to come out of our taps when we turn them on. We may experience some dry weather in summer in Wisconsin, but for the most part we have plenty of water to meet our needs.
