Support bipartisan effort addressing climate change

On April 27, 2017
Steve Coleman

To the editor:

I was excited to see that House Republicans have submitted a resolution to address Climate Change (H. Res 195) and important Catholic voices have expressed their support and gratitude.

For the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Frank Dewane of Venice, Fla., and Bishop Oscar Cantu of Las Cruces, N.M., each chairs of USCCB Committees, welcomed the commitment of these legislators to address the challenge of climate change.

Then I read that Catholic Relief Services (CRS) also extended its appreciation. They signed a joint letter in support of the resolution and “. . . [called] on Members of the House . . .  to support the Climate Solutions Caucus, a bipartisan effort to develop solutions to climate change challenges.” A bipartisan conversation is really exciting!

Finally, Catholic Climate Covenant urges us to encourage our members of Congress to join the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus. On the advocacy page of their website (www.citizensclimatelobby.org), anyone can encourage their representative to join the caucus.

Let your representative know that you want them to join the Climate Solutions Caucus. Write your representative or visit www.catholicclimatecovenant.org and follow the links to advocate. You may influence Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, Rep. Mark Pocan, or Rep. Ron Kind to join.

Steve Coleman, Marshall
