St. Cecilia Parish & Staff

Thank you!

To the editor:

St. Cecilia Parish in Wisconsin Dells is most appreciative of the diocesan offices for their support during the recent loss of our pastor, Msgr. Felix Oehrlein. These offices were most understanding and truly concerned for our welfare.

Amendment would protect all pre-born babies

To the editor:

I just read the article on efforts to provide constitutional protections for pre-born children in Wisconsin.

Catholics who argue that a Wisconsin Personhood Amendment is “wrong  for Wisconsin” might look to the Catechism for guidance. Taken from an excerpt of Donum Vitae (authored by Cardinal Ratzinger before he  became Pope Benedict XVI), Catechism 2270 states, “From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having  the rights of a person among which is the inviolable right of every  innocent being to life.”

Keep Christ in Christmas: Something to remember during the busy holiday season

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

Remember when we used to wait until after Thanksgiving for Christmas decorations to be put up in public places and most homes? Now we start seeing Christmas decorations in September!

I still wait until after Thanksgiving to start decorating our home and do most of my Christmas shopping. The first Sunday of Advent should be the sign for Christians to start preparing the way of the Lord. After all, it’s Christ’s birthday that we are supposed to be celebrating on December 25.

Personhood amendment promotes helpful discussion

To the editor:

The introduction of a personhood amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution provides a wonderful opportunity to engage our neighbors in the critical question of how we treat young people in our state.

Many citizens have not been exposed to the joyful message of hope found in the encyclical Humanae Vitae of the Servant of God Pope Paul VI, and do not realize how contraception poisons our culture and even the intimate relationships of spouses.

Political parties differ in their responses to issues

To the editor:

The veiled question at the heart of Professor Kreeft’s talk seems to have been, “Can a Catholic vote for a Democrat?” That question is hardly worth discussing unless self-justification is its purpose.

Ask instead which party is the more likely to feed the poor, house the homeless, and provide for the elderly and disabled. Then ask which party has thrust our nation into its current multitrillion-dollar debt immediately following a presidency marked by balanced budgets and prosperity.

Love is what it’s all about: Father Felix shared the love of God with all those he met

“Love is what it’s all about,” Msgr. Felix Oehrlein told high school youth attending the Resurrection 2004 rally in Wisconsin Dells. “Jesus reminds us to keep his commandments. Jesus came here and lived among us and lives with us today. He lives in the Church and you and I are that Church.”

Thanks: A word we don’t use often enough

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

It seems to me that our sense of gratitude has diminished in recent years. How often do we send or receive thank you cards? How often do we express our appreciation to people in our lives, let alone to God who has given us the gift of life itself?

Most of us would have to be honest and say we don’t say “thanks” often enough. We take so many things for granted.

Abstinence education: Why it’s more important than ever

Editor's View by Mary C. Uhler

In Wisconsin, we’ve been hearing a lot in the media these days about sex education. Our state Legislature is debating a bill which would overturn a law passed two years ago called the Healthy Youth Act.

That law required public schools that offer sex education to teach about proper use of contraceptives, among other things. The proposed new law, called the “Strong Communities . . . Healthy Kids Act,” would emphasize abstinence as the only reliable way to prevent pregnancy and disease.
