FOOTVILLE — The Janesville Catholic Saints Band traveled to nearby Footville on March 21 to bring the gift of music to the residents of St. Elizabeth Manor, an assisted living facility operated by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church.

Fifty-four band members, representing fourth through eighth grade students from St. John Vianney, St. Patrick, and St. William Schools in Janesville, made the trip to the small neighboring community at the invitation of Mother Christopher Lemire, administrator.

The band presented an hour-long concert with a wide variety of music, from traditional marches to sacred music, as well as popular melodies from years gone-by to jazz and even rock and roll.

Several older students were featured as soloists and in small ensembles performing their selections from regional music competitions.

The residents even joined in with the band, singing along on such old favorites as “God Bless America” and “I Love You Truly,” which was written by early 20th century Janesville-born composer Carrie Jacobs-Bond. The concert was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

The Catholic Saints Band is in its 33rd year as a cooperative program among the three Janesville Catholic schools and is directed by Cathy Mumma. The band performs several concerts annually, including performances at nursing homes or similar facilities.
