Dorothy Day’s granddaughter to speak at Edgewood College

On January 31, 2018
Kevin Wondrash

MADISON — Kate Hennessy, granddaughter of Dorothy Day, will speak at Edgewood College’s 13th annual Aquinas Forum at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, in Anderson Auditorium, 1000 Edgewood College Dr.

Hennessy will present the biographical story of her grandmother and her mother, Tamar Hennessy. She will draw from memories, diaries, and family letters as she explores the themes of love, suffering, voluntary poverty, pacifism, and what it means to perform Works of Mercy.

Like her grandmother, Hennessy is a prolific writer and most recently authored Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved By Beauty: An Intimate Portrait of My Grandmother.

Dorothy Day co-founded The Catholic Worker, a newspaper promoting Catholic social teachings that led to the formation of the Catholic Worker Movement. Dorothy Day also helped establish special homes to help those in need.

Named for the Dominican philosopher and theologian St. Thomas Aquinas, OP (1225-1274), the annual Aquinas Forum provides the Edgewood College community an opportunity to consider contemporary issues from a variety of disciplinary and professional perspectives.

There is no admission charge, and the public is welcome.
