MADISON — Our Lady Queen of Peace School will host a relevant event on Thursday, March 21, “Responding to a Digital World.”
In our world today, technology is a vehicle to enhance learning and to promote various modes of communication.
Here, at Our Lady Queen of Peace School, we strive to continue to build knowledge through exposure to many forms of technology. With this knowledge comes great responsibility.With advancements in technology, we strive to stay ahead of problems technology may cause. We have seen examples of cyberbullying, screen addiction, increased anxiety due to social media, and various other side affects of our technological world. We hope this event will help all of us respond responsibly to our technological world.
Informational event
This evening is designed to not only present information but also to provide an educational experience to adults and school-aged students. The information obtained will help when dealing with the ever changing world of technology.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval expressed a personal interest in this evening and will be the keynote speaker. In addition, Justin Patchin, a cyberbullying guru, will be there to talk to adults and students about social media.
Two gentlemen, Percy Brown and Rainey Briggs will speak about microaggressions that occur when using social media.
Our Lady Queen of Peace School will also be showing a film called Screenagers which addresses screen addiction in youth. Finally, University of Wisconsin-Madison students will be accessible to everyone through a booth format, to answer questions and teach current trends in Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and YouTube.
The evening will also consist of student presentations throughout the building led by Our Lady Queen of Peace fifth to eighth grade students who have been working on ways to communicate what they have learned in technology class and how they have utilized technology in a positive way.
Open to community
This evening is designed for parents, community members, and students in grades four through 12. All are welcome starting at 5:45 p.m. with the keynote speaker, and then continuing with breakout sessions until 9 p.m.
