Hope shines here!

Fonder Ponders column by Jackson Fonder

For the past year, we’ve been anticipating the opening of The Beacon, the new homeless day resource center operated by Catholic Charities.

The day finally happened, and The Beacon shined as a light of hope in the lives of over 200 men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Dane County.

On October 16, the doors opened as Catholic Charities staff and many volunteers warmly welcomed guests. I was overwhelmed with emotion as I volunteered throughout the week, helping wherever needed — in the kitchen, laundry room, picking up trash, and mopping some floors.the beacon,

Simple moments

So many moments touched my heart as I saw the impact this one center already has in the first week of service.

Moments as simple as:

• A little girl running around our courtyard laughing as she played with a service dog and her mom looked on.

• An elderly gentleman who felt better and smiled after receiving a haircut and enjoying a hot shower.

• A woman hugging one of the computer volunteers as they completed her resume together — a resume that could lead to employment.

• And a young man who was so appreciative of us washing the clothes on his back so he could go to a job interview.

Making a big difference

These simple moments, that we all take for granted each day, are making a big difference to people who need our help. People that we will continue to help every day — 365 days a year.

I could share many more stories of joy with you. Please join us on November 9th to hear more about the clients we serve, the volunteers we love, and the community that pulls it all together as we host our 22nd Annual Faith In Action Celebration. Learn more at www.ccmadison.org Tickets are only $75.
