Fr. Philip Conlon dies

FORSYTH, Mo. — Fr. Philip Conlon, a pastor emeritus of the Diocese of Madison, died on Monday, Aug. 22, 2016, at the age of 88.

Current arrangements are that Father Conlon will be cremated and a funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Ozarks Catholic Church, 951 Swan Valley Dr., Forsyth, Mo., on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. Interment is to follow in his hometown of Cuba City, Wis.

Father Conlon served in the Air Force/Air National Guard and was inducted into the Wisconsin Air National Guard Hall of Fame in 1990 with the rank of Brigadier General.

He was born December 29, 1927, in Cuba City, the son of Elizabeth Kilcoyne and Cletus Conlon.

He attended St. Rose of Lima Grade School, Cuba City; the Salvatorian Seminary at St. Nazianz for high school; St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.; and St. Bernard Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.

He did graduate study at St. Paul Seminary, Aquinas Institute, the University of  Wisconsin-Madison, Newport University, and the military schools: Air War College and Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

He was ordained a priest on February 7, 1955, by Bishop Leo Binz at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa.

He served as associate pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Dodgeville, and St. Dennis Parish, Madison.

He was a chaplain in the armed services from 1963 to 1967, serving in the United States and in Formosa and Thailand. He received two Meritorious Service Medals from the U.S. Airforce.

He returned to the Diocese of Madison in 1969. He served as pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish, Montello; St. Patrick, Janesville; and St. Mary of the Nativity Parish, Marshall. He retired with the title “pastor emeritus” in 1994.
