Good Friday Walk for Justice and Mercy to be held in Madison

On March 17, 2016
Kevin Wondrash

MADISON — What do walking for justice and mercy have to do with the three foci of Lent: fasting, prayer, and charity? Everything!

During the Church’s Jubilee Year of Mercy and the coming Good Friday time of meditating on the suffering and death of Jesus, Madisonians are invited to walk together to 10 stations in downtown Madison that will call to mind the need for justice and mercy in the world.

On Friday, March 25, all will gather at 4:30 p.m. at Cathedral Place, near the corner of West Washington Ave. and S. Henry St., to commence a one-hour, one-mile loop walk to 10 locations, including the Dane County Jail and the State Capitol.

Participants will walk prayerfully, stopping for a short time at each station to reflect, pray, and sing. Each station will help bring to mind and heart sufferings in our city and today’s world that call for justice and mercy.

This prayer experience is being planned and carried out by St. Francis Catholic Worker of Madison. It is well-known that Dorothy Day (mentioned by Pope Francis in the halls of Congress last September 24) founded the Catholic Worker Movement in 1933 to live out Catholic Social Teaching.

Still distributed worldwide, the Catholic Worker newspaper highlights Christian responses to contemporary social issues. The Gospel of the nonviolent Jesus remains at the heart of the numerous Houses of Hospitality and Catholic Worker farms in many parts of the world.

All are welcome to participate in this Walk for Justice and Mercy.
