Letters to the Editor (6-30-22)

Responses to ‘Some facts about guns’

In the letter “Some facts about guns” from the June 16 issue, the writer seeks to educate misinformed souls about the AR-15.

I don’t have any misconceptions about what the AR-15 isn’t. What I do know is that it fires a round every time the shooter pulls the trigger.

I remember a sporting weapon as a bolt, pump, or lever action rifle. The hunter had to be a good shot. The deer had a sporting chance to get away.

The definition of sporting is “fair and generous in one’s behavior or treatment of others”.

The writer agrees that mass shootings are cause for concern for all of us. In fact, gunshots are the leading cause of death for our children including those who were killed by an AR-15 at Robb Elementary School.

In reference to last week’s letter which claimed banning violent video games “would have a greater impact and provide more protection than banning sporting rifles (AR-15s)”.

Violent video games are available in most advanced countries and yet our country stands alone in the number of mass shootings.

The most lethal of these shootings has a common denominator, the AR-15.

Please explain this anomaly to us misinformed souls.
