Mass for new Catholics on May 1

On April 26, 2022April 26, 2022
Amy Yanzer, For the Catholic Herald

MADISON — “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy people: praise God who called you out of darkness and into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)

On Easter Vigil, April 16, the Universal Church around the world grew in number.

Catechumens were Baptized and candidates were received into the fullness of the Church.

For these new Catholics, their faith journeys continue this Easter season with the final period of their Christian initiation: postbaptismal catechesis or mystagogy.

“This is a time for the community and neophytes to grow in deepening their grasp of the paschal mystery and in making it part of their lives through meditation on the gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing the works of charity.” (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, 244)

A few paragraphs later, the text states that the bishop should arrange, if possible, to meet with the recently baptized and preside at a celebration of the Eucharist with them.

On Sunday, May 1, at 10 a.m., Bishop Donald J. Hying of Madison will do just that: celebrate Mass with the neophytes and their sponsors, godparents, family, and friends, at Holy Name Heights, 702 S. High Point Rd., Madison.

A light reception will follow, and each new Catholic will receive a gift.

Last year, the liturgy and reception that followed was a beautiful way for people to celebrate the bonds of faith that connect them. Stories of conversions and how God called people to the Church were shared.

This year, the Diocese of Madison looks forward to hosting the neophytes and those who have accompanied them on this journey.

If you or someone you know is a new Catholic, please join us.

Register at madisondiocese.org/rcia or call the Office of Worship at 608-821-3080.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, May 1.

Amy Yanzer is the associate director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Madison.
