MADISON — “Be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith [fortes in fide]” (1 Peter 5: 8-9).
Join other men from the Diocese of Madison and around the region for this special Lenten retreat.
We will be gathering once again to:
• Renew and deepen our understanding of Jesus Christ and His teaching through the sacramental voice of His Church
• Be renewed and strengthened through prayer and the grace of His sacraments, and
• As a result of this intensified communion of love and friendship with His Divine Majesty, advance his Kingship in our souls and our lay mission, firm in our faith.
The Fortes in Fide retreat will feature four excellent speakers and retreat guides:
Bishop Robert C. Morlino — the fourth Bishop of Madison. A native of Scranton, Pa., he was ordained to the priesthood in 1974 for the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus.
His education includes a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, the Master of Divinity Degree from the Weston School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass., and a Doctorate in Moral Theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, with specialization in fundamental moral theology and bioethics.
Before and after his incardination as a priest of the Diocese of Kalamazoo in 1981, Bishop Morlino taught philosophy and theology in numerous university settings, including the University of Notre Dame and St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia.
On July 6, 1999 he was named Bishop of Helena, Mont., and on May 23, 2003, the Bishop of Madison.
Fr. John Zuhlsdorf (“Fr. Z”) — Probably best known for his popular and award winning blog “What Does The Prayer Really Say?,” Father Zuhlsdorf is a longtime columnist in multiple publications, and a former collaborator with the Holy See’s Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.
A convert from Lutheranism in his early 20s, Father Zuhlsdorf studied theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, Patristic Theology at the Augustinianum — both in Rome — and was ordained in St. Peter’s Basilica by Blessed John Paul II in 1991. He has also appeared on television, including EWTN and the Fox News Channel.
Msgr. Kevin D. Holmes — the rector of St. Raphael Cathedral Parish in Madison since 2006. A native of Janesville, he attended Holy Name Seminary High School in Madison and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., where he received his B.A. and M.A. in Philosophy.
He finished his seminary education with four years at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium just prior to his priestly ordination in 1984.
He has served in a broad variety of capacities in the Diocese of Madison and is widely recognized as an outstanding teacher and preacher of the Catholic faith.
Fr. Eric Nielsen — the director of St. Paul University Catholic Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been the pastor of St. Paul’s since 2006 and a priest of the Diocese of Madison since 1995.
The oldest of seven children, Father Nielsen grew up in Oshkosh, graduated in 1984 from UW-Madison in civil engineering, and entered Mundelein Seminary in 1990.
As a young man he enjoyed a lot of outdoor activity and travel, but now spends most of his time at St. Paul’s encouraging students to focus on study and prayer as a path to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ.
