MILWAUKEE — School Sister of St. Francis Valine Althaus, 100, who served in education for more than half a century, died January 5, 2012, at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, Wis. The daughter of Valentine and Theresa Althaus, she was born September 23, 1911, in Kieler, Wisconsin. She was received into the School Sisters of St. Francis June 15, 1927; made her first profession of vows August 23, 1933; and final (perpetual) vows August 12, 1939.
Sister Valine is survived by her sister, Annette Newcomer of Peasant Hill, Calif., nieces and nephews; and the School Sisters of St. Francis community with whom she shared her life for 85 years.
Sister Valine served as a teacher from 1927 until her retirement in 1979. In the Madison Diocese, Sister served as a teacher at St. Joseph School, Hazel Green, 1967-1968; and St. Charles School, Cassville, 1968-1974. Following her retirement, she served as a volunteer instructor at the LaFarge Lifelong Learning Institute at St. Joseph Convent, Milwaukee; in the development office at St. Joseph Convent, Milwaukee, 1992-1994; and as a volunteer instructor and in the ministry of prayer and presence at St. Joseph Convent, Campbellsport, 1994-2012.
A wake and Funeral Liturgy were held January 10, 2012 at St. Joseph Convent Chapel, Campbellsport, followed by burial at Sisters’ Cemetery.
