Workshops on music and new Roman Missal

On January 27, 2011November 6, 2024
--

MADISON — The Office of Worship of the Diocese of Madison is sponsoring workshops for clergy and parish music and liturgy leaders entitled “Music and the New Roman Missal.”

A new Roman Missal was published by Pope John Paul II on Holy Thursday, 2000. Since all of the Church’s books are first published in Latin, time was needed to translate into the various languages, including English. These changes affect some of the parts regularly recited or sung by the people and they will go into effect in all of the dioceses of the United States on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011.

In preparation for this, Patrick Gorman, director of the Diocesan Office of Worship and the Madison Diocesan Choir, will facilitate several workshops throughout the diocese. These workshops are designed for priests, deacons, pastoral associates, liturgists, music directors, choir directors, and those who have the responsibility to plan and prepare music for the Mass.

Participants will review the changes in the new translation that affect musical selections, consider the emphasis on music in the liturgy in the revised Missal, discuss strategies for implementation, and sing through and listen to Mass settings from various publishers.

After Easter there will be additional workshops for liturgy committee members and liturgical ministers, including choir members. While this workshop is open to all, it is geared towards those who plan and prepare music for the Mass. Music packets will be distributed (with a limit of three per parish).

The workshops currently scheduled are as follows:

• Saturday, Jan. 29, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., St. Mary Parish, Platteville

• Tuesday, Feb. 8, 10 a.m. to 12 noon, Bishop O’Connor Center, Madison

• Sunday, Feb. 13, 1 to 3 p.m., St. Joseph Parish, Baraboo

• Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., Bishop O’Connor Center, Madison

• Thursday, March 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., Holy Mother of Consolation Parish, Oregon

One other workshop remains to be scheduled in the northeastern part of the diocese.

All sites are wheelchair accessible. In case of inclement weather the workshops may be postponed.

Go to www.madisondiocese.org/romanmissal for more information. To register for a workshop, e-mail [email protected] or call the Office of Worship at 608-821-3080. Registrants need to include their name, parish name, and specific workshop. Those interested are asked to pre-register so that there are enough materials at each location.

A $5 donation to cover the cost of materials is requested (but not required). The donation may be made on the day of the workshop.
