Confraternity of Most Holy Rosary begins at Blessed Sacrament Parish

On August 18, 2016
Kevin Wondrash

MADISON — The Lay Dominicans of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Madison are beginning the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.

The first meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 22 (Feast of the Queenship of Mary), in Blessed Sacrament Church, 2121 Rowley Ave., from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. The group will continue to meet at this time on the fourth Monday of every month. You do not need to be a member to come and pray with the group.

This is an apostolate of the Dominican Laity at Blessed Sacrament. Meetings will consist of a 15-minute talk about the Mysteries of the Rosary, followed by the recitation of the Rosary.

What is the confraternity?

The Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary is an international association of the Catholic faithful started in the 1470s by Alan de la Roche, OP, and under the direction of the Dominican Friars.

Today members promise the recitation of the weekly Rosary as their sole obligation. This obligation is very minimal and does not bind under the pain of sin, but the spiritual benefits are extensive. Along with several plenary and partial indulgences that are granted to members of the confraternity, members also benefit from the countless Rosaries that are offered for their intentions by the other members throughout the world.

The Rosary Confraternity is one of the largest organizations of this type, and enrolled members also participate in all the prayers and good works performed by the friars, nuns, Sisters, and laity of the Dominican Order.

The Confraternity was last reorganized by Pope Leo XIII in 1898 with his Apostolic Constitution, Ubi Primum, and continues to exist under the direction of the Dominican Friars, in accordance with the norms of the current Code of Canon Law (1983).

Enrollment cards are available at the meetings in Madison and the formal enrollment with Mass will be scheduled later this year.
